At the beginning of last year, opera singer, actor and vocalist Bert Simhoffer (68) suddenly had to deal with a mysterious bacteria that caused him a lot of damage. He even teetered on the brink of death… With the right care and the love of his wife Yvette, 27 years his junior, Bert was able to recover in the nick of time: “When I came out of the hospital, I was very grateful that I could live to tell the story.” . Fortunately, I recovered.”

Especially in that case, you should definitely take in the theater spectacle ‘De Tocht’ in Leeuwarden. Another thing: you’ve had an incredibly bad time. How is your health?

“Indeed I have experienced a horrible year. Through a wound near a cuticle on my finger, I acquired a bacteria that normally remains on the skin of humans. For me, the bacteria had the opportunity to enter my body and a lot of damage was done there. I had such a high fever that I no longer understood what was really going on with me. There was talk that they wanted to amputate my arm to prevent the bacteria from moving to my heart muscle. In the next phase it was thought that I would not survive. The fact that I came out of it so strong is a huge victory. When I got out of the hospital, I was very grateful that I could live to tell the story. Fortunately, I recovered.”

Since when are you working again?

“In May 2023, I had recovered to such an extent that I could marry people again from my position as Extraordinary Civil Registrar. I work in the municipality of Stichtse Vecht. This is a popular wedding municipality because of its beautiful buildings and the abundance of beautiful locations on the water. I really get married a lot, between four and six weddings a week. That is an incredible amount of work, because it takes me about ten hours per wedding.”
