Farewell without prize: Mark van Bommel with Dutch-tinted Antwerp in cup final against Union | Sport
--

The Antwerp of Mark van Bommel, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, Gyrano Kerk, Vincent Janssen and Owen Wijndal lost to Union in the Belgian cup final. In a sold-out King Baudouin Stadium it was 1-0 for the people of Brussels. A goal from Koki Machida at the end of the first half was enough to beat the cup holder. For Van Bommel it means that he says goodbye to Antwerp without a prize.

Antwerp and Union did not provide a memorable opening phase at Heysel. Both teams started the game cautiously and got the cup final off to a slow start. Antwerp was waiting for the counter-attack and hit the post from distance via Ekkelenkamp, but the match really exploded for the first time just before the break, when the Japanese gave Machida Union the lead in the 46th minute. Like a devil from a box, the defender appeared in the right place during a corner kick and tapped the opening goal against the ropes.

Antwerp opened the second half with the hunt for the equalizer, but did not get further than a few corner kicks and a deflection. While The Great Old continued to search fruitlessly for opportunities, Union also barely got to Antwerp’s goal. Ekkelenkamp caused excitement around the hour mark by going down in the box after contact with a defender, but the referee did not point to the spot. Thanks to the same Ekkelenkamp, Antwerp later had another great chance to equalize, but the midfielder did not punish Christian Burgess’ mistake. The defending champion did not score in the final phase either.

And so Van Bommel, Ekkelenkamp, Kerk, Janssen and Wijndal missed out on the Croky Cup. The cup went to Union again for the first time since 1914. In all competitions it has been 89 years since the people of Brussels won a prize, after the last national title in 1935.
