Van Bommel: ‘No one will tell me that we have failed this season’

Antwerp ends the season without a prize after losing the final. Mark van Bommel showed his disappointment at the press conference, where he “wanted to leave as quickly as possible”. “Because we know how good it feels to win, it is extra bitter to lose here. We are now experiencing what Union experienced last year in the competition. Today we are the ones who suffer,” said the Dutch trainer.

“It was not a great match,” Van Bommel also said. “The decision came from a standard situation, but otherwise Union did little with the ball. This defeat is therefore all the more painful, but now there is no other option than to look ahead and try to get the most out of the last three league games.”

Van Bommel dismissed the fact that the season was a failure without a trophy. “We are Antwerp, not Chelsea or Real Madrid. Last year we won everything. You can’t expect it to always be like this, it’s impossible. No one will tell me we failed this season. Many teams would love to be in our shoes today. No one would have dared to predict that we would win three prizes in two years.”
