This week, Netflix increased subscription prices in the Netherlands for the first time since 2021. Anyone who wants to watch on one screen pays 8.99 euros, 1 euro per month more than before. The most extensive subscription, which allows you to watch on up to four screens at the same time, is even 3 euros more expensive.

The company follows competitors Videoland, Disney+ and HBO Max, who have also increased their prices. Videoland, Netflix and Disney+ are the three largest streaming services in the Netherlands. Netflix is the largest of the three.

Netflix 75 percent more expensive

Streaming films, series and television programs has become considerably more expensive in recent years. In 2013, when the service was launched in the Netherlands, you paid 7.99 euros per month for a standard Netflix subscription. Now it is 13.99 euros: an increase of 75 percent.

Many prices of products and services have risen, and there has been significant inflation in recent years. Yet Netflix has increased its prices further.

If Netflix were to increase the price of a subscription based on inflation alone, the price of a standard subscription would now be just over a tenner. In other words: 28 percent more expensive. However, the price increase is now almost three times as high as inflation.

Disney

At Disney, the price increase also exceeds inflation. A subscription initially cost 6.99 euros per month in 2019 and that is now 10.99 euros, or an increase of 57 percent.

If the price had been increased in line with inflation, a subscription would now cost 8.30 euros (+19 percent). At Disney+, the price therefore rose three times more than inflation.

Videoland

Videoland, from RTL, also became more expensive. The price of a premium subscription went from 8.99 euros to 11.99 euros (+33 percent) per month. If the price had been increased in line with inflation, a monthly subscription to Videoland would now cost 10.07 euros (+12 percent).

Just like with Netflix and Disney+, the price of a subscription to Videoland has risen considerably more than inflation, by roughly three times inflation.

Subscription form

Netflix has introduced new subscriptions since its introduction. These are cheaper, in exchange for poorer image quality, fewer screens to watch at the same time, or advertising is shown. Videoland also came with stripped-down subscriptions.

But Netflix’s standard subscription has remained the same over the years, so you can easily compare the price. Videoland’s initial subscription form also still exists. And because the price increase is calculated in percentages, you can still compare them easily.
