Khalid Kasem will not return to television for the time being. BNNVara reported this on Wednesday after a conversation with Kasem. The parties agree that this is not an issue ‘because of all the discussion surrounding his person’. Jeroen Pauw will remain the co-host of the early evening talk show this entire season.
The positive statement by the dean of the Amsterdam Bar Association last week makes no difference in this decision, the broadcaster said. What this means for the collaboration in the longer term will be discussed in the coming weeks.
Former lawyer Kasem presented the talk show in early January Khalid & Sophie because he was linked to bribery by this site. After investigation, the dean found that Kasem was not found guilty of bribery. However, he does receive a formal warning because in one case he made inappropriate statements to a client in order to get an invoice paid.
However, lawyer Geertjan van Oosten filed a complaint against Kasem last week with the dean of the Amsterdam Bar Association. Van Oosten has asked the dean to bring the issue surrounding his former colleague to the disciplinary board. Kasem previously worked at Van Oosten’s office.
Official bribed
In January of this year, this site published an article based on some of these recordings, probably made by Peter R. de Vries, in which Kasem speaks with De Vries and his son Royce. In it, Kasem acknowledges that he bribed a civil servant in his role as a lawyer. This would be a so-called selection officer. He works at the Judicial Institutions Agency (DJI) and examines, among other things, whether a detainee can be released from prison.
In those recordings, made in 2019, Kasem admits that he accepted money with the aim of getting a detained client released earlier. When AD asked questions about this, Khalid Kasem emphatically denied this. In a written response he wrote: ‘It concerned a client with a high outstanding bill. I tried inappropriately to get some of that paid. It’s nothing more than that.’
