At least five people have died in a serious bus accident on the A9 near Leipzig, Germany. Dozens of injured people are also taken into account, German media report.
According to German media, the bus left the road around 9:45 am and then crashed into trees along the road. The vehicle then overturned.
The vehicle from bus operator FlixBus was reportedly driving from Berlin to Zurich, Switzerland. There would have been 53 passengers and 2 drivers on the bus.
At least five people have died. Other passengers were injured, but the exact number is still unclear. According to local media, dozens of injuries are expected.
The authorities responded with large equipment and closed the road. Photos show emergency services helicopters landing on the highway.
A spokesperson for FlixBus tells the German Image that the bus operator works closely with local authorities and rescue workers on site. “We will do everything we can to determine the cause quickly. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this accident and their families.”

The A9 is an important connection between Munich and Berlin. The highway is closed in both directions due to the accident.
The serious bus accident is not the first on this part of the highway. In May 2019, a similar accident occurred about 15 kilometers further south on the A9. A bus also overturned then. One woman was killed and more than seventy others were injured. Some were in serious condition.
