For the fourth day in a row, thousands of people in Israel have taken to the streets to demonstrate against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In Jerusalem, demonstrators marched to the prime minister’s house.

Thousands of demonstrators will stand again in front of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament building, on Tuesday. About 3,000 of them marched to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s house in the evening, demanding that he resign.

Police said some “rioters” tried to remove barriers outside. Mounted officers charged into the crowds to prevent them from breaking through the fences and reaching the prime minister’s home.

Footage shows one of the demonstrators lying down under a police vehicle with a water cannon to prevent it from being used against demonstrators. The police managed to get him out of there.

Large protests have been organized against the government since Saturday. Tents have been set up in front of the parliament building so that the demonstrators can stay for days.

Various reasons for demonstrating

There are several reasons why protesters take to the streets. They are demanding new elections, something Netanyahu recently rejected again. They are also fighting for an agreement with Hamas, which should lead to the release of the more than 130 hostages that Hamas is probably still holding in Gaza. Netanyahu is failing in the eyes of the protesters by bringing the hostages home.

People are also taking to the streets because they disagree with the exemption that ultra-Orthodox Jews have from military service. The demonstrators want the burdens to be shared more fairly.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews have been exempt from military service since the founding of the State of Israel. Netanyahu had to come up with a new law this month to guarantee that exemption after March, but he has been given a month’s extension by the Supreme Court.
