At least twelve people were killed and thirty injured in a drone attack in eastern Sudan on Tuesday. This is reported by the news agency AFP based on witnesses and health service employees. The attack has not yet been claimed.
In April 2023, war broke out in Sudan between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The violence has already cost thousands of lives. More than 8.5 million Sudanese have been displaced, according to United Nations figures.
Tuesday’s attack took place in Atbara, a city that had so far been spared from the bloody civil war. According to witnesses, the attack caused a fire to break out during an iftar, the meal that Muslims eat just after sunset during Ramadan.
The iftar was organized by the Islamist militia Al Bara, which fights alongside the army. Both civilians and militia members were present.
