Valerii Zaluzhnyi will become Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Kyiv reports. This is striking because Zaluzhnyi was replaced as commander of the armed forces at the beginning of this year.
In early February it was announced that Zaluzhnyi would be replaced as commander-in-chief of the army. He regularly could not agree with President Volodymyr Zelensky on the conduct of the war.
In November, Zaluzhnyi wrote in an article for The Economist that the war had reached a stalemate. The president openly contradicted this. Zaluzhnyi also wanted to call up 500,000 new soldiers, but Zelensky thought that was unrealistic.
After the dismissal, Zelensky offered him another position within the Ukrainian military leadership. So now he will be Ukraine’s delegate to the United Kingdom. It has not been announced why this was chosen.
The United Kingdom is an important ally of Ukraine in the fight against the Russians, who invaded Ukraine more than two years ago. Like the United States and other European countries, the UK provides military support to Ukraine.
