Sixteen years ago, Frans and Mariska Bauer got married. In a new one The Bauers – 20 years later the couple returns on TV to the church where they once said yes to each other.

“I can still see us standing here, when we arrived here, with all those fans. And that Jantje said: ‘I have to pee, mommy.’”

The Bauers return to Oudenbosch

The Bauers got married sixteen years ago in a church in Oudenbosch. “Because we think it is the most beautiful church in the Netherlands. And that happens to be very close to Fijnaart, so that’s why we got married there,” Mariska explains about the place near their hometown.

The two get into the car and travel to Oudenbosch, in the south of the country. Upon arrival at the church the memories come flooding back.

For the Bauers, their wedding day, all these years later, is still “one of the most beautiful days” of their lives. “Also for many friends and family who were there at the time. They are still talking about our wedding.” Frans agrees with Mariska. He calls “everything” that happened that day “special.”

Road down memory lane

In the church the Bauers make one trip down memory lane. They light a candle and have a chat with the pastor present. “I have a very nice feeling when I am here and I have wonderful memories here. I can still see the entire Bauer family sitting there, flowers everywhere. Do you remember when we arrived here and that our little one still had to pee?” asks Frans Bauer.

The pastor indeed remembers the Bauers. “I remember those three of you causing quite a stir. They were constantly on the move, there was never a moment of rest.”

The Bauers burst out laughing. “He hadn’t forgotten yet, had he, that the sons made a mess here in the church during our wedding. You can imagine, it was sixteen years ago, but that man has not forgotten it yet.”

‘If only the world consisted of many more Bauers’

Viewers are positive every week about the Bauers’ return to television. “If only the world consisted of many more Bauers,” concludes one viewer after last night’s episode. The sons of the Bauers are particularly popular. “Those sons, it’s wonderful how they interact with each other and their father.”
