Samsung is working on Wear OS 5 smartwatches
Samsung’s smartwatches have been running Wear OS for years. This is an operating system made by Google that works well with the Android software on your smartphone. The latest version is Wear OS 4, but Samsung has reportedly started developing Wear OS version 5.
In fact, the version number of the software has surfaced on a Samsung smartwatch, which has been on sale since July last year. On X shared Matthew Reiter his discovery of the test software on his Galaxy Watch 6. We expect it to be Samsung’s own version of the operating system. On top of this lies the One UI 6 shell, which is also installed on modern Samsung phones.
It is striking that the software was found on a Watch 6, because the Watch 7 series will be released later this year. In the past, the new Samsung smartwatches and Wear OS software appeared at the same time. The software may already be available to Watch 6 users this year, before the successors are presented.
The Google I/O developer event will take place on May 14. Here, Google presents new software, features and probably new smartphones. We also expect to hear more about the developments surrounding Wear OS 5 here.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 can continue for years to come
Samsung’s smartwatches have been popular for years and with the latest model – the Galaxy Watch 6 – the manufacturer made the necessary improvements. For example, the biggest pain point of the energy-consuming Wear OS software is that the battery of a smartwatch runs out quickly. For example, while a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 won’t last a whole day, the Watch 6 will last one to two days.
