Apple is said to be working on an AI function that should be able to summarize all kinds of texts offline. This will reportedly make it possible to summarize iMessages and Safari web pages, but the feature should also work with other text documents.
The function would use Apple’s own language model, called Ajax, writes AppleInsider based on insiders. The AI could identify key words and phrases from all kinds of long texts, which are used as the basis for the summary. In addition to texts from the Safari browser and Messages app, Ajax can also “receive texts via a dedicated text box or digital documents.”
This feature would work completely on-device. Apple is trying to guarantee the privacy of users, the news site writes. The company also wants to implement such an AI summary function in version 18 of Safari itself, AppleInsider previously reported.
The website further claims that Apple wants to use Ajax to generate offline ‘simple answers’ to user questions. The AI could look up and display certain information in the phone, such as saved contacts or events in the Calendar app. However, for ‘more advanced’ answers, processing must take place on the server side. The tech giant reportedly wants to use technology from other companies, such as Google or OpenAI, for this. Apple has not yet decided which AI company it will work with. There is a chance that Apple will provide more information about iOS 18 and generative AI on June 10. The company will then hold its annual developer conference WWDC.
