Supervisor NVWA is conducting a criminal investigation into Babboe. The cargo bike manufacturer is said to have deliberately withheld information about broken frames during inspections. “The company has taken major risks with the safety of people,” says the X regulator.

“If information or material is withheld during our inspection, we as a supervisor cannot do our work properly. While we stand for the safety of people,” the NVWA explains. According to the regulator, Babboe has undermined supervision and thus taken “major risks with safety”.

According to RTL News the company hid broken frames during the inspection. This is evident from photos, audio recordings, documents and conversations with former Babboe employees. Former employees tell RTL News that they hid broken frames in vans for inspection.

The NVWA therefore started a criminal investigation into the manufacturer a few weeks ago, together with the Public Prosecution Service (OM). This should show whether the signals of RTL News to beat.

The supervisor notes that there are still Babboe bicycles in the street scene: “That is not the intention.” The watchdog says it has been “very clear about this: not on bicycles”.

The cargo bike manufacturer has previously been discredited. After more than a hundred reports of broken frames, the NVWA called for a sales stop in February. Several Babboe models were found to be unsafe. According to the regulator, the company did not properly investigate the causes. The manufacturer is also said to have taken no measures.

Babboe, owned by Accell that also makes Batavus bicycles, recalled the City, City-E, Mini and Mini-E models a week later.
