In addition to the city party PLOP, coalition partner SP in Assen also has little interest in investing 9 million euros in the cycling center at Stadsbroek. Of the five parties in the coalition, two are now against the plans, on which a decision will be made by the municipal council in May.
The mayor and aldermen intend to place a roof on the velodrome. Costs: 3.5 million euros. In addition, there should be a sports campus for 375 MBO students from Drenthe College and Alfa College. This carries a price tag of 5.5 million euros.
The SP wants the plans to be thrown into the trash bin as quickly as possible. “We always thought the cycling track was a waste of money,” says party leader Jannie Drenthe. “A prestige project in which millions of public money is used for a small group of people.” She would rather see Assen invest in recreational sports and meetings in the neighborhood. “We are happy to use these millions for that.”
The SP thus joins the City Party PLOP. PLOP leader Henk Santing even called the 9 million euros for the project an ‘abuse of the city’. He especially criticized the fact that three classrooms would be allocated to education, while according to him, education itself indicated that three is the absolute minimum.
The SP also thinks three classrooms are ‘minimum’. “Education itself also contributes minimally and this costs the people of Assen a maximum amount of money,” says Drenthe. “We shouldn’t want it this way either.”
In addition to the City Party PLOP and the SP, the coalition also consists of the Christian Union, Assen Centraal and the VVD. These five parties have 20 of the 33 council seats. PLOP and the SP together have 7.
