Just like last year, mini families can apply for free public transport cards this year. In total, tickets are available for more than 91,000 households. The tickets can, just like last year, be requested via a public website. The campaign will start immediately after the summer.

After it turned out last year that it was possible for everyone to apply for the cards, intended for mini-families, an attempt was made to send the cards directly to the target group this time. However, this turned out not to be possible due to privacy legislation.

Transport region chairman Melanie Van der Horst writes in a letter to the regional council that she consciously chose to distribute the maps via a publicly accessible website, ‘because we have confidence in our residents’. An evaluation would also show that the cards did indeed reach the target group last year.

According to Van der Horst, the campaign also offers a ‘great opportunity’ to introduce people to public transport without obligation. “This method of distribution gives every resident who needs it the opportunity to request the tickets, even if they are not on the radar of the municipalities,” says Van der Horst. Tickets are also distributed through aid organizations such as the Food Bank, the Salvation Army, and asylum seekers’ centers.

Each address receives six 1.5-hour tickets for bus, tram and metro that remain valid for one year. Become a total 91,500 sets have been made available via the website (equal to the number of minimum-income households), 6,500 sets have been budgeted for distribution at the Food Bank (based on the number of food parcels issued per week) and 9,100 sets are available for distribution by other aid organizations .
