It took almost three years of litigation, but now the miniature golf course De Oude Vuurtoren on Vlieland is also allowed to sell hot snacks in the kiosk.

“What a hassle,” sighs owner Harry Jurjens. “I am very happy that the time has now come.” In a final ruling, the Northern Netherlands court recently ruled that for the legalization of an existing kiosk on the miniature golf course on Dennenlaan, the municipality should not have imposed the condition that only small snacks and non-alcoholic drinks may be sold there.

The municipality considered this condition necessary to protect health and to prevent the creation of an independent catering facility, but according to the court, these arguments are not sufficient. The municipality was given the opportunity to come up with better motivation, but failed to do so.

Bitterbal and fries

Jurjens never intended to sell alcohol, he says. But he can now offer hot snacks. “That’s what I’m working on. What should you think about? A bitterbal, a cheese soufflé, a fries, very simple.”

The kiosk is the top of the old lighthouse, which Jurjens bought twelve years ago via Marktplaats. It functioned as a garden shed for Vlieland enthusiasts in Hendrik Ido Ambacht for 25 years.

“I had a good conversation with the municipality. We reached out to each other. In the future, I will no longer go against the municipality, but will work together with the municipality.”
