WhatsApp was hit by a global outage on Wednesday evening. As a result, users were unable to send and receive messages. The problems now appear to have been largely resolved, although a number of people are still reporting problems.

The first reports from people in the Netherlands who were experiencing problems were received on the disturbance site Allestoringen.nl around 8 p.m. The number of reports rose to over 120,000.

Since about 8:45 PM, WhatsApp has been working again for most people, but not for everyone. There are still people who have problems sending or receiving messages.

Problems with WhatsApp were also reported in other countries. Tens of thousands of reports were received from India, Brazil and the United Kingdom.

In addition, Instagram and Facebook, which, like WhatsApp, are owned by Meta, also seemed not to be working properly for some time. Those problems now appear to be over.

NU.nl has asked Meta for a response, but has not yet received one. Meta recently no longer has a spokesperson in the Netherlands.
