From this summer, anyone who has a variable contract with Eneco and has solar panels on their roof will pay 11.5 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity supplied back. The energy company announced this on Monday.

The measure will come into effect for some customers in June. Other customers will have to deal with these return costs from July or August.

It was previously clear that Eneco would charge feed-in costs. The company did not yet report how high the rates would be. Now there is clarity about that.

According to Eneco, the measure is beneficial for customers who do not have panels and do have a variable contract. They will soon pay 6 cents per kilowatt hour less.

With this measure, Eneco joins a growing list of energy suppliers that charge costs to households with solar panels. For example, Vandebron and Greenchoice have already introduced this.

Why do you suddenly have to pay if you have solar panels?

The Dutch have many panels

This is because more and more Dutch people have solar panels on their roofs. They generate electricity themselves and can supply the energy they do not use back to the power grid. They receive compensation for this.

They may also deduct the electricity they supply back to the grid from their consumption, which is called netting. This netting has recently come under fire, but the House of Representatives recently decided to maintain the measure.

In the meantime, energy suppliers are seeing the costs for all that returned electricity rising. According to them, these are mainly borne by households without panels, often tenants. To do something about this situation, many suppliers have recently started charging panel owners when they supply electricity.

Furthermore, the feed-in costs should encourage owners to use the electricity they generate with panels immediately as much as possible, for example by turning on the washing machine.

Nothing changes for people with a dynamic. The new policy also has no consequences for those with a permanent contract that will continue for a while. New customers with panels who sign a permanent contract with Eneco pay 6 euros more.
