Cava producer Freixenet is sending approximately 80 percent of its staff home temporarily in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Due to persistent drought in the area, the grape harvest is disappointing, which means production has to be reduced. The measure will come into effect next month.

Freixenet employs 778 people in Catalonia. Up to 615 employees may be stuck at home for a longer period of time, reports say The Guardian. The company says that the measure is necessary to remain active in the region.

Catalonia is facing a water shortage for the fourth consecutive year. In February, the local government declared a state of emergency. For residents, this means that they can use a maximum of 200 liters of water per day. It is also no longer possible to shower on the beach and watering of parks and other public green areas has been restricted.

Spain previously took national measures against the effects of the ongoing drought. In May last year, the Spanish government introduced support measures worth 2.2 billion euros to support farmers and citizens. Agriculture accounts for almost 80 percent of water consumption in Spain, while households consume 15 percent.
