The House of Representatives approved an amendment to the Water Board Act on Tuesday, April 23. This makes it possible to increase the water board tax for companies that benefit from the work of water managers.

The aim of the amendment to the law was to include the so-called benefit principle in the Water Board Act. In addition, the adjustment makes it possible to distinguish between private homes and business premises.

The water board tax is partly based on the development of the value of buildings. Because homes have increased in value faster than commercial properties, the water board tax for homeowners has risen faster in recent years. The bill aims to fix the relationship between the two.

Tax increases or decreases

It is not yet clear exactly how much the water board tax will increase or decrease. This varies per water board, and the water boards have room to deviate from the calculations. The government does make it clear that the levy will remain the same for tenants and will change at most by a few tens of euros for an average household with an owner-occupied home.

During the vote, a motion from BBB, CDA and SGP was also adopted that requests the cabinet to investigate how the work that farmers perform for water boards can be included in the levy they have to pay.
