The curtain has been pulled back on the fully electric Mercedes-Benz G-class in Germany. A downright insane EV with a specification list that will blow your mind.

The model’s full name is the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology. Why the EV in Stuttgart has not been called EQG is a mystery to us. Not only does this taste better, it would also be in line with the other electric models in the Mercedes arsenal.

Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology

Perhaps it is because this electric SUV is completely out of step with those models. While the updated EQS and its brothers had to endure an intensive wind tunnel treatment, the electric Mercedes-Benz G-class borrows its aerodynamic properties from a brick. The hood does rise a little steeper, but that’s about it.

The fact that the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology has a range of 470 kilometers despite its angular design sounds impressive. However, know that between the ladder chassis lies a gigantic 116 kWh battery pack. Just like the new G 63 AMG, you don’t buy the electric Mercedes-Benz G-class for low consumption.

The problem of the electric Mercedes-Benz G-class

That huge battery pack itself weighs 700 kilograms. And then we come to the Achilles heel of the electric all-terrain vehicle: its weight. The beast weighs no less than 3,085 kilograms clean on the hook. Go out with four bulky friends and there is a chance that you will first have to get your C1 driver’s license.

For that reason the maximum payload of this EV only 415 kilograms. More than that and you go over the restrictive limit of 3,500 kilograms. This is also a reason for Mercedes not to offer a towbar on the electric G-class.

It is therefore not a multi-purpose workhorse with which you can transport a trailer for your dressage horse or boat. However, it is still a real terrain killer. Each wheel has its own electric motor and gearbox (for the low gearing). This offers possibilities while off-roading. For example, the electric car can rotate around its own axis like a tank, by moving two wheels forward and two wheels backward.

The electric Macan still feels (sometimes) like a real Porsche

Also shapes hydrolock (where a combustion engine sucks in water and tries to compress it in vain) is no danger with this Mercedes-Benz G-class, which means the device can navigate through water up to 85 centimeters deep. There is no shortage of power when driving off-road. The Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology has 587 hp and 1,164 Nm of torque. Enough to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than five seconds. The top speed, on the other hand, is a modest 180 km/h. Want to know more about the electric G-class? Then check out our video.
