During the May holidays, Schiphol will use new security scanners to improve traffic flow at the airport. Schiphol has replaced all security scanners used to check departing passengers with faster ones.

The new devices need less than three seconds to see whether travelers are carrying prohibited items. The new technology also requires fewer searches. In addition, old scanners regularly required a long reset. According to Schiphol, the new, faster systems meet the high safety requirements.

10 percent more travelers

Schiphol expects 10 percent more travelers than last year during the May holidays, which start next weekend. The airport expects to handle at least 70,000 travelers every day, which could rise to 80,000 on peak days. These numbers are just as high as during the summer holidays.

Although Schiphol wants to reduce waiting times for travelers with the new technology, it emphasizes that the queues will not disappear completely. Schiphol advises travelers to prepare their trip well, even on the day they return.

Big problems

Two years ago, major problems arose at Schiphol at the beginning of the May holidays due to staff shortages, which meant that the airport could not handle the large number of travelers. It caused chaotic scenes and enormous queues. The airport therefore decided to allow fewer flights to depart.

During the May holidays, travelers mainly go to Spain, Great Britain and Italy.
