Dubai World Central, as the project is called, should ultimately accommodate 260 million passengers per year. By comparison, Atlanta Airport, currently the busiest airport in the world, handles just over 100 million travelers annually. The new megahub will have five parallel runways and 400 gates.

On Sunday, Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai approved the plans. According to him, the intention is for all flights from Dubai International Airport, Emirates’ current home base, to transfer to Dubai World Central. The first phase of the expansion should be operational within ten years. Then there is room for 150 million passengers per year.

There were previously plans to develop Al Maktoum, which is currently mainly used for cargo flights, into the largest airport in the world, but partly due to economic setbacks and the corona crisis, those plans were put on the back burner for a while. Now Dubai wants to move forward at full speed again.
