At the beginning of this year, there were more than 83,000 physical stores in the Netherlands. That number increased by 1,100 last year, interrupting the downward trend of recent years, according to figures from statistics agency CBS.

Since 2010, the number of stores in the Netherlands has fallen almost continuously. Only in 2022 was there a brief increase.

But thanks to a slight increase of 1.3 percent last year, there were almost as many physical stores at the beginning of this year as there were two years earlier. Yet there are still fewer stores than before the corona crisis in 2020, when there were still more than 84,000.

The number of booksellers has increased relatively the most at 12.9 percent. That is surprising, because the number of bookstores decreased the most in 2021. The number of DIY stores increased the most in absolute numbers, with 310 stores.

Sellers of white and brown goods (-3.3 percent) and audio and video recordings (-2 percent) disappeared most last year. However, a lot fewer of these types of stores disappeared than in 2022, when both decreased by approximately 7.5 percent.

The total increase in the number of shops in the Netherlands is offset by a decrease in the shopping streets of major cities. Last week, research by real estate advisor Colliers showed that many shops have disappeared in city centers. These often make way for catering and tattoo parlors, among other things.
