Susan and Jan

“My daughter would prefer that I hang out more with people my own age, because she thinks my friends are too young,” says Jan. “She may be right, but I have nothing to do with other elderly people. I don’t feel like an old fart, I work out at the gym twice a week, I like crowds and going out with young people. I feel most comfortable in a group.”

The two are inseparable. “We are half a century apart, but it was friendship at first sight. I have taken her to my heart, not as a daughter, but really as a very best friend. I can say anything to her. Because of Susan I have been in a balloon, camped in the forest in the icy cold and eaten in almost all the restaurants in Groningen. Some people say we’re like a married couple – we’re both just not good at being alone. After my wife died six years ago, I fell into a hole, we were married for almost 54 years. Since Susan I haven’t felt lonely a day
felt.”
