Making a podcast in total darkness: Nikkie de Jager and her partner Wes van Os like it. That is why the pair has now started a new season of Lightless Lounge. “People share a lot more in the dark.”

Paul de Leeuw was the first guest of this new series. Within Temptation singer Sharon den Adel, Patty Brard, Duncan Laurence and Hanneke Groenteman were also interviewed by Van Os and De Jager.

De Jager is especially looking forward to the latter. “That’s kind of my media mom: she taught me how to interview,” the thirty-year-old presenter told NU.nl. “So I think it’s really fun and very exciting to interview her now. Maybe she has some tips for me.”

Some guests are acquaintances of De Jager and her co-presenter. That doesn’t necessarily make the conversation easier, she says. “If you already know someone, you are inclined to skip the standard questions. You may be too quick to assume that everyone knows the person in question well.”

De Jager is not afraid to share personal anecdotes with listeners. “Because Wes and I are responsible for editing the conversation, we can speak freely. If we really go overboard, we can always cut that part out.”

‘Media takes quotes from conversations and inflates them’

That is also pleasant for the interviewees, because De Jager notices that guests are less reserved in a completely darkened room. “They share much more, including personal stories.”

The presenter believes it is important that everyone supports their own statements. That’s why she always presents the conversation to the guests afterwards. “If they think it’s fine, then we think so too. At least we did our best.”

De Jager is not surprised that the media sometimes extract certain quotes from a conversation. “It’s kind of how the media works: taking small pieces from a conversation and blowing it up completely,” says the presenter. “The great thing about a podcast is that you can take the time to have an in-depth conversation. What the media then does with it is the responsibility of journalists.”

A new episode of is released every two weeks on Wednesdays Lightless Lounge.
