The Danish court today shares a brand new portrait of King Frederik and Queen Mary. This is the first official photo of the new royal couple that will now be distributed throughout Denmark. See the full portraits after the click.
The gala portrait was taken by photographer Steen Evald in the Green Room of the Royal Reception Halls of Christiansborg Palace. A special place where successive kings and queens have been captured for the same type of portrait over time.

Portrait of King Frederik
The reigning monarch in Denmark is at all times the Sovereign of the Orders for the two royal knighthoods, the Order of the Elephant and the Order of Dannebrog. That is why in this gala portrait the king is wearing for the first time a number of historical objects that kings – and most recently Queen Margrethe – have worn during their reigns. A portrait photo of King Frederik was previously shared shortly after the change of throne.

In the gala portrait the king also wears the dress uniform of the navy. The change of throne gave King Frederick the title of admiral, which is why the full dress uniform features four stars on the shoulder insignia. The naval officer saber that the king wears with the uniform was owned by Frederick IX and was presented to King Frederick by Queen Ingrid in 1997 in connection with the king’s appointment to the rank of lieutenant commander of the Naval Reserve in 1997.
Portrait Queen Mary
In the portrait, Queen Mary wears the Crown Jewels for the first time. This is the emerald green set with tiara, necklace, earrings and a large brooch that can be divided into three parts. The emerald set is one of four jewelry sets or trimmings at the disposal of the Queen of Denmark and usually displayed in the treasury of Rosenborg Castle.
