Lily is only 9 years old. At the table in talk show Humberto however, she made a mature impression with a story about how she is bullied for her haircut. “I have tears in my eyes,” reports one viewer. And: “What a wonderful child.”

The reason for inviting Lily Richardson was the program for Humberto Tan Essentials† In the VPRO series on NPO Zapp, children sit in a hairdresser’s chair. They are cut by hairdresser Marko and meanwhile tell their story. The often eloquent kids talk about their attitude to life, what their ‘worries are’ – according to the VPRO – or what makes them very happy.

Powerful words Lily at Humberto

Lily has a non-standard haircut. She knows that herself. But to be bullied with that… Lily impressed in Essentials with strong words. It touched many viewers. And yesterday at Humberto that happened again. Her mother and the hairdresser had also come to the TV studio.

“The bullying hurts,” Lily said candidly in the barber chair. “I just think it’s crazy because I don’t think it’s possible. Everyone is different, so it should just stay that way.” The girl was received with much applause at the table by Humberto. It put a beautiful smile on her face. “Do you find it a bit exciting here?” asked facilitator Humberto Tan. “Well, not too bad,” replied Lily. “Uh… yes. A little.” She admitted even more: “I am often not allowed to participate. Because I have fluffy hair.”

‘I pretend to be my own best friend’

She’s doing a bit better now. “But the funny thing is, I was at a barbecue yesterday and I was bullied again with my hair.” Not so funny at all, of course, but Lily continues: “I was bullied by a boy, he didn’t know me. They had already warned that if people don’t know me, they would act ugly. And then they said ‘you’re weird’ and ‘you have ugly hair’.” “How do you deal with that?” Humberto wanted to know. “What do you do when children say that to you?” Lily again: “I usually just get up and pretend to be my own best friend. Then I look in the mirror and say all kinds of nice things to myself. That’s how I help myself. As if someone else is telling me.”

Singer Stef Bos is visibly enjoying himself on the other side of the table. He sits with two thumbs in the air and nods in agreement. Gerard Joling also watches with admiration. “How sweet,” says the musician. “Who taught you that?” Humberto Tan then wants to know. “I’ve seen how that works myself,” explains Lily. “And my mother gave me a tip. Other people also said that I should just be nice to myself. Then you will eventually believe it yourself. And then it worked.”

Beautiful words for such a sensible little girl, so many viewers thought. You can read some nice comments here.
