Chinese doctor who was the first to write about corona banned from lab by government | Coronavirus

--

Chinese virologist Zhang Yongzhen has been banned from entering his laboratory since Monday. Yongzhen was the first scientist to write about COVID-19 in January 2020. Now he says the Chinese government has banned him from his workplace.

Yongzhen and his employees were unexpectedly told on Monday that they had to leave their laboratory in Shanghai. According to the virologist, it is an attempt by the Chinese government to put pressure on scientists.

The scientist thinks the government wants to conceal how poorly it has handled the COVID-19 outbreak. He wrote this on Monday in a now-deleted post on the Chinese social medium Weibo.

A Yongzhen employee confirmed on Monday that the doctor has started a protest. He sat in front of his laboratory all day in the pouring rain.

The Guardian spoke briefly with Yongzhen on Tuesday. He could say little about his protest action and said it was “inconvenient” for him to talk.

China had the strictest measures in the world during the corona pandemic. While many countries abandoned most measures, Chinese metropolises were still locked down in the event of a few infections. The infection and death figures published by the Chinese government are strongly questioned.
