The film Oppenheimer premiered this morning in Tokyo, but according to the AFP news agency it was not made into a big spectacle. Besides a few movie posters, there was hardly any advertising for the film.

‘A lot of consultation is needed’

The film’s Japanese distributor previously said that “much debate and consultation” was needed before it could be decided that the film would be shown in the country. “This is because the themes addressed in this film have a very important and special meaning for us Japanese,” the distributor explained.

Oppenheimer is about scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who, as leader of the Manhattan Project, was partly responsible for the production of the first atomic bomb.

Japan is still the only country where atomic bombs were used as weapons in wartime. In Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the weapons caused a total of more than 220,000 casualties during World War II in August 1945.

‘Collective memory’

Casper Wits, Japan expert at Leiden University, previously explained to RTL News that this is still one of the decisive moments in modern Japanese history. “Nowhere else is people so aware of what an atomic bomb means. That collective memory is therefore instilled in children from a young age.”
