The (grand)parents of students at the Rosa Boekdrukkerschool in De Baarsjes come from 35 countries. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this mixed school, a booklet about the history of the school will be published on July 5. The director calls on former students to make a contribution.

We previously wrote that the students of Rosa Boekdrukker primary school in Vancouverstraat won the first prize after the exhibition of works of art made from plastic waste on Bos en Lommerplein. On November 13, the students were in a jubilant mood again. That date is the birthday of the namesake, whose portrait adorns the school facade. Every year on this ‘Rosa Day’ we reflect on the diversity of students, whose (grand)parents come from 35 countries.

Reflection of the neighborhood
‘Our differences make us one’ is the motto of the school in De Baarsjes, which was created from a merger of De Pionier primary school and Mercator primary school. The school initially consisted mainly of students of Moroccan and Turkish origin. In 2009, a parent initiative was launched to create a more mixed school. “The main reason was to create a neighborhood school where children could go to school close to home and thus easily meet up with classmates,” explains director Stefan Koytek. “It is also logical that the school reflects the neighborhood and the mixed school offers the advantage that the children learn a lot from each other’s cultures.”

Anniversary book: appeal
In honor of the 30th anniversary, a book about the history of the school will be published. This anniversary book will be published on July 5, during the Rosa Festival. The book will include former students with photos and their professions. In order to include as many former students as possible in the book, the director calls on them to register.

Role models
“We are looking for those people who went to school here; to hear what they have become. In this way they can be role models for our current and future students. And in any case it is nice for the school, where some teachers have worked for decades, to know where the students from back then ended up.” Former students can email their response to [email protected]. The school would like to receive their photo and an explanation of what they did after school before May 24.
