The popular VPRO program Dwars door de Lage Landen, in which Belgian Arnout Hauben, accompanied by cameraman Philippe and soundman Ruben, walk through the Netherlands, will visit our region this time. On Sunday evenings, the trio tells beautiful stories from the people they meet along the way.

From Friesland they enter the Colonies of Benevolence in Wilhelminaoord. There the three Belgians speak with Bennie Mensink and are referred to a squatter who has said goodbye to materialism.

In Steenwijkerwold they bump into two cyclists from Steenwijk, who talk about their sometimes reckless young years. When the cyclists continue their way, the three head towards Steenwijk. There, their eye falls on the villa for sale on Tromp Meestersstraat and they play a game of pétanque.

In Giethoorn they get into trouble with their punt and encounter a group of recently graduated nurses from Meppel and Staphorst. “My mother is watching that,” one of them shouts, laughing, as the boat sails on again.

Together with father Gerrit Petter and son Richard, they take sheep to various pastures in Weerribben-Wieden and arrive in Blokzijl after a night’s sleep. There they speak to 96-year-old Mr Schuurman, who still remembers the days of the Zuiderzee. ‘God created the earth, except the Netherlands, because the Dutch did that themselves’ is the conclusion of the trio. Join Arnout, Philippe and Ruben yourself on Sunday evening, 8:16 PM on NPO2.
