The battle for the title in the third division is unprecedentedly exciting. Leader Volendam lost 2-0 to HSC ’21 in the last round, but closest attacker SC Genemuiden did not take full advantage of that mistake. The team of coach René van der Weij gave away a 3-1 lead on its own field against VVSB (3-3). Because contender IJsselmeervogels also lost (1-2 to Rijnvogels), the top position of the third division was at stake in a direct match between numbers one and two on Saturday in Volendam.
RKAV emerged as the winner
Home team and leader RKAV created the first danger of the match. Daan van Baarsen took aim at Genemuiden’s goal after about eight minutes, but goalkeeper Hidde Streutker was alert and tapped the ball over the crossbar. After more than half an hour of play, Berwout Beimers had a great chance to score the equalizer, but his bicycle kick lacked power and was easily caught by Dion Vlak.
A few minutes later, RKAV took advantage of Genemuiden’s poor defense. Nick Runderkamp got the ball played back well and shot the ball into the goal via the underside of the crossbar. After more than an hour, Roy Tol struck Genemuiden again on behalf of RKAV. The attacker shot in diagonally and left goalkeeper Streutker without a chance. Tol also made it 3-0 in extra time.
Genemuiden falls outside the top three
The victory over Genemuiden brings leader RKAV to 60 points from 31 games. Genemuiden lost second place to IJsselmeervogels, which won 1-6 against SV Urk. Sparta Nijkerk won 3-2 against Hoogeveen and moved into the top three.
