Rapper D-Rock of Eurodance formation 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor has Parkinson’s disease. The artist announced this on Thursday in the TV program 90’s Dance on NPO3.

In the program he says that he was diagnosed about fifteen years ago, but that he has not wanted to share it with the public until now.

“When I was 38, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s,” says D-Rock, whose real name is René Phillips. The rapper tells presenter Hila Noorzai in the program that at first he could not believe that he was ill. “I didn’t want to do it. I don’t have Parkinson’s. That’s not possible. I’m still so young, you know. I was 38. No man, that’s not possible, I didn’t believe it. But it was true,” he says .

D-Rock decided not to share his diagnosis with the public. “I didn’t want to be the reason for fewer bookings. I thought: I’ll just carry on and not tell anyone.” The fact that the rapper is still on stage is partly due to his neurostimulator, a medical implant.

“If my hands or my leg are shaking, I can regulate that with this,” says D-Rock. “I’m very happy to be one of the first to receive this.” On stage, the duo has been supported by an additional rapper, MC Masta, for some time now.

‘I have to be realistic, I have Parkinson’s after all’

D-Rock also says in the broadcast that he hopes to be able to perform for a long time with 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor, which he has formed with singer Des’Ray for over thirty years. “I want to perform with 2 Brothers for a long time, but I also have to be realistic, I have Parkinson’s after all.”

The rapper calls it “a strange disease”. “I could feel very good now, but in ten minutes I could become very depressed, or my body could react very differently. But the future looks good, I think.”

2 Brothers on the 4th Floor, founded by brothers Bobby and Martin Boer, had its heyday in the 1990s. The formation was successful worldwide and scored hits with songs such as Never Alone, Dreams (Will Come Alive) and Fairytales. The act is still frequently booked for events at home and abroad.
