Relatives of two Australians and an American who disappeared during a surfing trip arrived in Mexico on Sunday and were able to identify the three bodies found. Mexican authorities say the victims suffered gunshot wounds to the head.

Brothers Callum and Jake Robinson and their friend Jack Carter never arrived at their holiday address. They had been missing since the end of April. The men are believed to have died during an attempted theft of their pickup truck, prosecutor Maria Elena Andrade said at a news conference.

The bodies of the three men “all have a hole in their head caused by a firearm,” Andrade said. She added that the trio had visited Mexico several times, always without any problems.

According to prosecutors, three suspects have been arrested. Two men and a woman are suspected of involvement in the case. One of those arrested is said to have previously been guilty of violence, drug trafficking and theft, authorities reported.

The bodies were found in Baja California, the American police service FBI confirmed on Friday. The Mexican coastal state borders the US and is known for its beautiful beaches. Violent criminal organizations are active.
