What should have been an exciting, but above all fun period for Rens and Christine ended in a new episode of Buy without looking Monday evening completely different. The couple couldn’t wait to move to Haarlem, but suffered a major blow during the adventure after Rens was diagnosed with MS. Despite everything, the couple remained positive.
Rens and Christine started their work full of enthusiasm Buy without looking –adventure. The couple, proud parents of son Juul, decided to sell their home in The Hague and wanted to move to Haarlem. They had a good reason for this: many friends lived in the city and they came there regularly. It therefore felt like a logical step to look for a house there.
Because they had not succeeded on their own, they turned to the RTL 4 show. And with success, they were chosen as participants. Real estate agent Alex van Keulen was allowed to look for a characteristic single-family home with three bedrooms and a city garden with a budget of 520,000 euros. That would be a tough task, he predicted. Especially because Rens and Christine were also picky about certain neighborhoods in Haarlem.
But even before Van Keulen had properly started his search, Rens and Christine came with shocking news. Rens had been diagnosed with MS, a disease of the central nervous system that damages nerves. “It was with incredible joy last week that we won Buy without looking, to a pitch-black day yesterday when I was told I have MS. Can’t really comprehend it yet. It is incredibly sad,” Rens said in a video. “It all still has to land and find a place. This is life, this is how it goes. Ups and downs.”

Presenter Martijn Krabbé visited to encourage the couple. Moreover, he could well imagine that they would withdraw from the program. But Rens and Christine didn’t want to know about that.
Rens had received financial help from friends and family, which allowed him to go to Mexico for treatment. Because a lot had to be arranged and that would cost a lot of energy and time, Rens and Christine wanted nothing more than the help of the team at Buy without looking. “So if there is something that can be taken off our hands, we simply take it. And that is actually looking for a house, which we have seen in recent years how much time it takes.”
The wishes for the house remained the same, Rens explained to Krabbé. “If I now change my mindset to: ‘I need a stair lift’, then I am already 10-0 behind. I’m just hoping that the treatment will work and that I can keep walking up those stairs,” he said positively.
Sleepless nights
While Rens traveled to Mexico, Alex resumed his search. Things were anything but smooth, but he eventually found a home in Haarlem that met all of Rens and Christine’s wishes. Although, the two were not immediately enthusiastic when they saw the house. “I still have to process that it is here in North and it doesn’t look at all as we would like,” Christine admitted.
In addition to finding a home, there was even more good news: Rens’ treatment had been successful. On the day of the unveiling, Rens and Christine couldn’t believe their eyes. “Well guys, just act normal. This is so beautiful. I am very happy with it,” Christine shouted when she could finally admire her brand new home after months of waiting.
The couple saw themselves more than happy in their new home in the coming years. “I really had sleepless nights, but then you get this… Completely successful.”
What is MS?
Multiple sclerosis, or MS for short, is a chronic disease in which inflammation occurs in the central nervous system. As a result, the brain cannot perform some functions properly, resulting in, for example, blindness, extreme fatigue and memory problems. The disease cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be slowed down with medication.
