While unemployment is high in many countries, there is a shortage of employees in the Netherlands (especially in economically prosperous times). On the one hand, this concerns migrant workers who – unskilled – often perform physically demanding work, for example in greenhouses. In recent decades, the shortage of trained personnel has also increased. Are you such a person, and are you also emigrating to the Netherlands to use your knowledge and skills here? In addition to looking for accommodation, you have to arrange a number of things. Below you can read more about a number of important administrative matters.

Residence permit and work permit

People from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland need a residence permit or visa to stay in the Netherlands. In addition, a work permit is often required. Ask your employer (or possibly the payroll or employment agency) for help with this. One of these parties may even arrange the necessary permit(s).

Registration with the BRP and possibly municipality

Are you staying in the Netherlands for work for less than four months? Then you must register in the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP). Are you staying longer than four months? Then you must also register with the municipality where you will live within five days of arriving in the Netherlands. You can use the Citizen Service Number (BSN) that you receive to arrange tax and health insurance matters, among other things.

Arranging tax matters

People who live in the Netherlands have to pay taxes here. If you have registered with the municipality, you will automatically receive mail about paying taxes. You may be able to use the 30 percent scheme, which means that you have to pay less tax. Do you already know your gross income, but do you want to know how much of it you will have net? Arrange health insurance

Everyone who lives in the Netherlands is legally obliged to take out health insurance. The premiums and conditions can vary considerably, so compare health insurance policies carefully. Then also arrange your registration with a GP.

Open a bank account

If you are going to work in the Netherlands, you will need a Dutch bank account to deposit your wages. In the Netherlands, wages may not be paid in cash. You can often apply for a bank account with IBAN online. Please note that many banks require proof of identification with BSN and your residence permit, and your home address according to registration with a municipality.
