HEINKENSZAND – The sport of handball is starting to flourish again in the Beveland municipalities and that makes handball club GSC in Heinkenszand want more. A new youth team will start at the club on Tuesday (April 2).
“After Orion in Heinkenszand more or less stopped its activities, we took the initiative a year or two ago to start working with youth in Heinkenszand again,” says youth coordinator Auke van Hinte of GSC. ‘And that is successful. In addition to a number of veterans, we now have a group of about 20 youth members, boys and girls mixed, aged from 9 to 12 years. A very nice and sociable group that plays in the Zeeland and West Brabant competition.’
Grow
Handball is a flashy sport for boys and girls who can take a beating and where you don’t complain when you get a push, says Van Hinte. ‘Despite the growth of the youth department, we do of course encounter problems in terms of team composition. For example, we will have to divide the current group next season due to age division and that is why we are looking for new members who can supplement the new teams.’
The group with members born in 2016 and 2017 will start on Tuesday. ‘They will, like the other groups, train in the Stenge sports hall in Heinkenszand. The training sessions are on Tuesdays from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The groups born in 2012 and 2013 and 2014 and 2015 can also use supplementation. If you are interested, you can join this group.’ He trains on Tuesdays from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. ‘The training sessions are free for new members until the big holidays, so that the children can really get acquainted with the sport of handball.’
