The arrest of the suspected hostage taker in Ede

NOS Newstoday, 1:11 p.m

The man suspected of the hostage situation in Ede was jailed for four months last year for a death threat. Most of this sentence was conditional. He was also required to undergo treatment.

The Gelderland court sentenced the 28-year-old man in December last year to 120 days in prison, of which 103 days were conditional. In addition, the court imposed two special conditions: the man had to report to the probation service and be treated by a psychiatric clinic.

The death threat took place in March last year. The verdict in the case does not reveal what exactly happened.

Arraigned

The suspected hostage taker must appear in court again this afternoon. He will then be brought before the examining magistrate, who will decide whether his pre-trial detention will be extended by fourteen days.

He was arrested by the police on Saturday afternoon after holding four employees of a café in Ede hostage for hours. It is still unclear why. They did not know the suspect, the owner of the café said last weekend.

The hostage taking in Ede lasted from 5 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The four hostages – one of the café’s owners and three employees – were released unharmed.
