SURHUISTERVEEN – Surhuisterveen is faced with a growing housing shortage. Suitable and affordable housing is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Local Interest Surhuisterveen is now sounding the alarm together with the SWA Contact Council Foundation.

“This problem has serious consequences for our community and is causing exodus and hindering the flow.” according to village interest. There are also consequences for the social cohesion and economic vitality of Surhuisterveen.

“The lack of sufficient affordable housing has led to a disturbing trend of exodus in our village. Young families are moving to surrounding municipalities where
there are more options in the field of housing construction. This not only has an impact on our local economy, but also on facilities such as schools, shops and associations that depend on a stable and growing population.”

The Achtkarspelen municipal council is called on to take action. “We advocate an ambitious and decisive policy aimed at encouraging housing construction in Surhuisterveen. Despite raising this issue in several ways, where we receive answers as to why something is NOT working, we ask you as a municipal council to see what CAN be done. .”

Dorpsbelang and the SWA Contact Council Foundation see possibilities. This allows for expansion in surrounding meadows and the lead time of construction projects can be shortened to maintain speed. There are also vacant lots in the village where houses can be built.
