Sustainability

EDE The province of Gelderland has restricted the installation of wind turbines around the Veluwe. This is in connection with the honey buzzard, a bird of prey with legal protection status, which breeds in the Veluwe.

The province indicates that there is a risk of this bird colliding with a wind turbine. It has therefore been established that no wind turbines may be installed on the Veluwe and one kilometer around it. “There is still room for ten to thirty wind turbines in the circle of one to eight kilometers around the Veluwe, but only if they are stationary during daylight in the months of July and August,” the province concludes following an environmental study.

ENERGY GOALS

Furthermore, the wind turbines must already be included in the plans of the regional energy strategy. The various RES (regional energy strategy) regions have set goals with regard to the generation of solar and wind energy.

The province explains: “We want to help RES regions around the Veluwe to achieve their energy goals. That is why, in addition to the aforementioned ten to thirty wind turbines, we allow additional wind turbines in the one to eight kilometer zone, provided that they are stationary when the honey buzzard is in our country. This is from May to August.” The province indicates that during these four months the honey buzzard is active during daylight. “By stopping the wind turbines, we completely remove the risk of a collision.”

TEMPORARY

The province of Gelderland expects this policy implementation to be only temporary. “We are currently investigating various measures that will probably mean that wind turbines will have to stand still less in the future. Such as the use of cameras with proximity detection, which see that birds are approaching.”
