Indonesia will permanently relocate around ten thousand residents of the volcanic island of Ruang. There are fears of more eruptions after the very active volcano recently caused considerable damage.
Last Tuesday, Ruang erupted again. An ash cloud about 5 kilometers high rose from the volcano off the coast of Sulawesi.
The Ruang also erupted earlier in April. Then the eight hundred people living on the mountain were temporarily evacuated and thousands of people in surrounding areas were also advised to leave. Due to Tuesday’s eruption, it was decided to make the evacuation a permanent move.
Local authorities have declared a state of emergency. This will remain in force until May 14. There are warnings of a possible tsunami if parts of the volcano collapse due to a new eruption. Air traffic in the region is also affected by the eruptions.
