The KNRM has awarded the crew members of the teams on Schiermonnikoog and Ameland a certificate for their efforts in the rescue operation of seven passengers from the Fremantle Highway on July 26, 2023.

That car freighter was on fire for a few days above the coast of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. Sixteen other passengers were rescued by helicopters.

One of the Indian crew members rescued from the water succumbed to his injuries after jumping about 30 meters into the water from the Fremantle Highway. The other six rescued passengers had also made that jump. They were injured by the impact on the water.

According to the KNRM, which had a podcast made of it, this was initially unavoidable. On board the lifeboats they had their hands full caring for the wounded. “Right next to the large, red-hot ship, from which fat black smoke was billowing, the KNRM volunteers took great risks,” the rescue company reports.

KNRM director Jacob Tas presented ten certificates to volunteers from Schiermonnikoog and five to volunteers from Ameland on Monday. These are for volunteers who are celebrating an anniversary or have performed a special rescue operation.
