Flash delivery company Getir has plans to withdraw from the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom. The originally Turkish company only wants to focus on the domestic market.

The British news channel Sky News reported this based on insiders at Getir. According to the channel, the flash delivery company is raising money from investors to finance the withdrawal from the three countries and to invest additionally in the Turkish market. Getir previously left France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. According to the Bloomberg news agency, the company would only make a profit in Turkey.

From four to one

Getir – which in addition to Amsterdam is also active in Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Haarlem and Amstelveen – grew rapidly during the corona pandemic. Together with flash delivery companies Gorillas, Zapp and Flink, the city was flooded with so-called dark stores, warehouses, and electric bicycles and scooters.

The presence of dark stores in residential areas also resulted in a significant increase in nuisance in the area. Responsible councilor Van Dantzig therefore decided to put a stop to new dark stores at the beginning of 2022, after which a lawsuit was filed against existing stores. The councilor later introduced regulations that dark stores are only allowed on industrial estates.

Of the four flash companies in the city, only Flink would remain with Getir’s departure. The British Zapp left the city two years ago, which caused a lot of anger among the delivery people. The German Gorillas was taken over by Getir a year and a half ago. In July of last year there were also rumors that the Turkish flash delivery company would leave the city, but a spokesperson at the time called this ‘purely speculative’. Getir now states that it will not respond to rumors.

Dark stores have been closed before

Last year, the flash delivery company decided to close the doors of five warehouses in the city. Getir said he was done with the discussion with the municipality about the zoning plans and wanted to put the closures behind him. This was about Karperstraat, Baarsjesweg, Overtoom, Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat and Jan Rebelstraat. The latter was the only location that, according to the municipality, fits within the zoning plan for flash delivery.
