Last January, Max (23) saw from his window in Delft that a car slid into the canal. A woman ended up in the water with her car upside down. Max didn’t hesitate for a moment and jumped into the icy water to save the woman. Today he received an award. “Really a complete surprise,” he says.
“It really means a lot to me,” says Max, as he sits in front of his door enjoying the moment with friends. “It’s special that there is so much recognition for it. It has really brought me a lot of good.”
‘Especially happy with the good outcome’
What Max is especially happy about is that everything is going well with the woman who was in the car. “The outcome was good. That is mainly the feeling I have now, a few months later. And it is nice to be able to talk about it again with friends and family.”
Below are the images from last January:
Max was expected at the town hall in Delft today at noon, but he did not know what would happen there. “I received a speech from the mayor, Marja van Bijsterveldt, she told me why we were together and what happened in January.
Appointment with the victim
And then suddenly the award appeared. Called the Medal of Honor for Humane Assistance. Max can’t believe his luck. “I think it’s really beautiful.”
The woman who was in the car was not there today. But she and Max did have some contact yesterday. An appointment was made to meet up soon and toast to the good outcome.
And now? Now Max enjoys life with friends. And they look out at the place where it all happened. “We’re having a beer, the sun is shining. It’s a wonderful day, and it can only get better from now on, of course.”
