The manufacturing industry is most affected by ransomware in the Netherlands. The sector accounts for 30% of all ransomware attacks. This is evident from the Ransomware Retrospective report, published by Unit 42, a research team of Palo Alto Networks.

Unit 42 saw an increase of approximately 49% in 2023. Recent research by security firm Sophos shows that more than half of malware found in small and medium-sized businesses is aimed at stealing data and credentials. Although large companies often make headlines and talk show tables with spectacular cyber attacks, SMEs are proving to be an increasingly attractive target for cyber criminals. This is partly due to their relative vulnerability and limited security budgets, which makes them less resilient to such threats.

The Sophos research report underlines the value that cybercriminals attach to SME data. More than 90% of attacks aim to capture sensitive information, with keyloggers, spyware and data thieves being the preferred tools for these digital intrusions. Once inside, attackers can have free rein to carry out further malicious actions.

Ransomware attacks are the biggest threat. New attack techniques, such as remotely encrypting files and targeting managed service providers, are increasingly being used to cause damage. The infamous hacker group LockBit has caused significant damage in 2023, further highlighting the ongoing threat of ransomware.

In addition to malware, cyber criminals also use more sophisticated techniques, such as setting up a conversation with the victim via email, sometimes even followed by telephone calls. This method allows attackers to gather detailed information and make their attack attempts more personalized and targeted. They have also adapted their strategies to bypass spam filters, for example by using OneNote attachments or PDF files with hidden malicious links.

The Sophos report emphasizes the importance for SMEs to take their digital security seriously. By investing in adequate security measures and staying alert to the latest attack tactics, you can better protect yourself against the increasing threat of cybercrime. This is crucial to not only protect business operations but also to ensure customer privacy.
