The city of Groningen holds its own GroningenSail in the week prior to the maritime event DelfSail. The deep along the Hoge and Lage der A is then full of special ships.

The sailing heritage that is on its way to Delfzijl passes through the city, so why not hold on to those ships for a few days? That is exactly what Groningen will do on June 6, 7 and 8 under the name GroningenSail. On Sunday, June 9, the so-called sail out and the ships sail on to Delfzijl.

“It will be an event with a quay festival, market, snacks and drinks,” says project leader Heleen Mulder of the municipality of Groningen. “Comparable to ZomerWelVaart and WinterWelVaart. But we don’t just do it for the party, because we also have an economic program with an energy debate, we are holding a networking dinner in the Groninger Museum and there is an afternoon with SMEs. Everything under the theme of energy transition and hydrogen.”

For ambassadors and companies

Groningen wants to continue to put itself on the map as a hydrogen region that is at the forefront of the energy transition. In recent years, the municipality has also traveled to Scandinavia and Northern Germany. During GroningenSail, the municipality invites these parties, among others, to come to the city.

According to Mayor Koen Schuiling, this will result in a visit from various ambassadors and numerous companies. “For example, there is interest from France because Engie plays an important role in the Eemshaven,” he says. “But we also focus on Denmark, the rest of Scandinavia and the Baltic States.”

Is GroningenSail mainly an event for bobos? “No, really not,” assures Mulder. “It is also for Stadjers. Everyone is welcome. But we also choose these moments for international guests because you don’t want to have to knock on the door of companies and institutions every time. This is a great opportunity for that.”
