The redesign of the intersection at ‘t Goylaan and Linschotensingel in Utrecht will start on May 13. This means that some motorists will have to take a detour via the A12 motorway until June 21. According to the municipality, the adjustments to the intersection are necessary because many cars now stop at the traffic lights at busy times.

“These queues are sometimes so long that traffic also comes to a standstill on ‘t Goyplein, Socrateslaan and Constant Erzeijstraat. These traffic jams slow down the flow of buses and affect the quality of life on and around ‘t Goylaan. Cyclists and pedestrians also have to wait longer or cross between the traffic jams of motor vehicles,” the municipality writes.

Late last year it was already announced that the intersection would be taken care of. The traffic lights will be replaced by so-called dosing lights, which allow cars to pass little by little at busy times. The road will also be narrower by constructing one lane in each direction. This should make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to cross.

A thermal camera will be installed at the crossing point to recognize people waiting. If the wait is too long, the camera turns the dosing light for cars to red, so that pedestrians have enough time to cross. According to the municipality, this is mainly intended for people who need more time to cross, such as the elderly or people with disabilities.

Detour

The work is divided into three phases and the first phase lasts from May 13 to June 21. During this period, work is being done on the road and cycle path on the north side. ‘t Goylaan is closed from the Oud-Wulvenplantsoen in the direction of ‘t Goyplein until June 21. Traffic towards ‘t Goyplein and Waterlinieweg will be diverted via Europalaan and A12.

Traffic driving from ‘t Goyplein into Hoograven can continue. “Unfortunately, we have to divert one direction of traffic because otherwise we would not have enough space to carry out the work safely. We chose this direction of travel because research shows that we have to divert less traffic this way,” the municipality said.

The bus also has to make a detour during the work and the ‘t Goylaan stop on the side of the district office will not be in use until June 21. Cyclists and pedestrians can pass the works on the south side of ‘t Goylaan.

Orange Bridge

Phase two of the redevelopment starts in October and lasts until March 2025. During this period, Vitens is working on the water pipe under the southern cycle path. “This is only possible after the summer, because a lot of water flows through the pipe in the summer. We cannot wait for this, because we will also be working on roads in the area, such as the Jutphaseweg and the Socrates Avenue.” From March 2025 to April, the final phase will be worked on the cycle path on the south side of ‘t Goylaan.

Finally, the municipality says that due to the work on the intersection, but also because the closure of the Oranjebrug, soon there will be more traffic in the neighborhood. “It will probably become busier on WA Vultostraat, Briljantlaan, Vondellaan, (other parts of) ‘t Goylaan and possibly parts of the Jutphaseweg.”
