OVERFIGHT > During a large-scale inspection of garages in Utrecht Overvecht, a large quantity of materials for committing explosive raids was found. Goods intended for drug trafficking were also found. The municipality of Utrecht, police, customs and the RIEC cooperated in the inspection. Following the inspection, four garages will be closed immediately by order of the mayor.

During the inspection, approximately 60 boxes were opened and checked. Many of these were checked from outside with specially trained dogs. Suspicious cars were found in two boxes, one of which may be related to explosive attacks. Further research is now being conducted into this.

Furthermore, goods intended for drug trafficking were found in garages, including substances for the production of hemp and the use of nitrous oxide. Explosives were found in one of the boxes. As a result, the neighborhood had to be cordoned off, several homes were temporarily evacuated and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service had to arrive on site. Further investigation into these finds will also follow.

Regular checks

Storage locations and garages are attractive places for criminals due to limited social control. Landlords often do not know what is going on in the garages. This can lead to dangerous situations, not only for the landlord of the location, but also for local residents. Consider fire hazard and damage to the health of local residents. That is why the municipality and police regularly check whether storage locations are being used for their intended purpose. And whether this is done in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations. After the checks, the municipality pays attention to communication with residents and entrepreneurs to make them aware of the danger of criminal activities in storage locations.

Safety

The Utrecht integrated approach is aimed at breaking criminal careers and criminal money flows. In this way we make it more difficult for criminals and, for example, we hinder the preparation for an explosive robbery because the items are confiscated and they are removed from anonymity. In this way we work together towards a safe and liveable Utrecht.

Reporting makes sense

During the action, residents shared their concerns with the authorities. These types of reports help to tackle these types of illegal and criminal activities that pose a great risk to the neighborhood. Residents and entrepreneurs can always report suspicions of crime. This can be done at the police via 0900-8844, with the local police officer or anonymously via 0800-7000, in case of emergency call 112 or report online via www.meldmisdaadanoniem.nl
