The north of the Netherlands is a unique region with a shared history from the period 1940 to 1945. The Northern Netherlands Liberation Museum tells visitors about this: a moving story in a difficult time.

In the monumental former Potato Flour Factory ‘De Woudbloem’ a unique and special exhibition has been set up about the war and liberation 1940-1945.

On display is a beautiful exhibition with photos, stories and explanations, objects and films about the events in the province of Groningen in the years 1940-1945. All this illuminated from the northern perspective.

War and liberation

The presentations focus on the events during the war and the liberation 1940-1945 of the region, villages and polders in part of the current municipality of Midden-Groningen. About the resistance, resistance fighters and war victims.

About the liberation of our region. About the role of the airplane, the significance of radio in wartime, the progress of church bells, the food supply. There is a special presentation about the victims and the consequences of the April-May strike in 1943, including the story of ‘De Drij van Woudbloem’.

The presentation Groningen War and Resistance 1940-1945 shows how the Allies liberated our province after heavy shelling and fighting. There are several old newsreels on display.

New film documentaries

A number of new film documentaries have been made especially for this exhibition in which eyewitnesses tell their stories of what they experienced during the war years. The new film documentary about ‘Wottertied, the inundation of Groningen’ is very special. It shows how the occupying forces flooded a large part of the province of Groningen in an attempt to stop the advance of the Allies.

As additional information, Readers have been created on various subjects containing stories, photos and images of documents from various archives.

The De Woudbloem Potato Flour Factory is an industrial building with an important history. Construction started around 1904. The factory is located where many waterways meet and was therefore easily accessible for ships carrying potatoes.

The historic building now houses a shipping company. The unique heritage location of the former storage shed is currently in transition to a cultural center with the Pop-up theater and cinema. This special place is used for various extra activities.

Theme ‘Woudbloem celebrates the Liberation’

With the theme ‘Woudbloem celebrates the Liberation’, there will be plenty to experience in and around the old potato warehouse De Woudbloem during the exhibition of the Liberation Museum Northern Netherlands in April/May with an extensive program of music, theatre, theater and film.

In this special environment of authentic, industrial Groningen heritage in the heart of the beautiful nature reserve ‘t Roegwold, the stories come to life. Books and DVDs are for sale in the Museum Shop, all about the war and liberation period.

You can view books and brochures at the reading tables. The museum volunteers are happy to answer any questions. Various refreshments are available in the cozy Museum Café, and you can also enjoy a simple, good lunch there.
